CLIENT NEED

A large city in the Commonwealth of Virginia needed to understand the impact of application outages in order to develop a disaster recovery plan. No municipal disaster recovery plan existed, which put certain city services at risk in the event of an extended outage at the data center.

PLANIT Technology Group INVOLVEMENT

Very little documentation existed of applications or the systems and networks that they run on. No written prioritization existed of these applications. PLANIT Technology Group provided the city with a Business Impact Analysis (BIA), which included interviews within 26 departments to evaluate the impact of application downtime. We determined which applications are mission critical, which are secondary and which are tertiary.

BENEFITS ACHIEVED

The city government now understands the potential impact to city services in the event that applications and systems go down. PLANIT Technology Group provided the City with:

• A detailed matrix listing every application, prioritizing them, and describing the underlying systems and networks required to run them
• A solid baseline to build a disaster recovery plan for applications and systems in the event of an extended outage
• Identification of rogue and duplicate applications, which can be consolidated or eliminated
